Ultima Thule Bowl was designed by Finnish artist and designer Tapio Wirkkala (1915 – 1985) in 1968. Tapio Wirkkala, a sculptor by education, referred to the natural environment for inspiration. He initially made the wooden moulds, used for his iconic Ultima Thule Glass Collection, by hammering and burning their interior with hot liquid (molten) glass, creating the desired effect of frost and icicles.
