Description

Taccia, designed by Italian brothers Achille Castiglioni and Pier Giacomo Castiglioni, is an elegant iconic lamp first devised in 1958, designed, and prototype was created in 1959. After 3 years of study the Taccia went into production in 1962.

The lamp is produced with a shallow concave reflector of spun aluminum enameled with heat-proof matte white paint. The reflector sits in a large clear blown glass bowl, which rests freely on the base, allowing it to be moved to position the light at just the right angle for the environment. The base of the lamp, hiding the incandescent bulb, is made with extruded corrugated aluminum, resembling a grand column; it serves to disperse the heat of the bulb. The base is available anodized black or natural sandblasted finish.

In a 1970 interview Achille Castiglioni said of Taccia: "We consider it the Mercedes of lamps, a symbol of success: perhaps because it looks like the shaft of a classical column. We certainly weren't thinking of prestige when we designed it. We just wanted a surface that would stay cool."
